FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and you have made the decision to change electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new electricity provider must give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means that you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity to your premises if you switch to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from the distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the switchover can't take place until your old provider has sent your final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after your next meter reading. So, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will also tell your current provider that you're leaving them. The transfer to the new provider will not happen straight away, because the old provider will have to do a final meter reading. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Deregulation in Brisbane

Ever since the late 1990s Australia's electricity market in has been undergoing a deregulation process. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing an intra-state electricity network which allowed electricity that is generated in one state to be sold in another state.

Another stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In order to stimulate better competition the energy market was divided into two levels

Distributors have the responsibility for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.

Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The electricity market in Brisbane was fully deregulated in July 2016 . This enabled consumers to switch to another provider that had cheaper prices.
