Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and have chosen to change electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new electricity and gas provider has to give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and stay with your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply electricity and gas to your premises after you change to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity and gas bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity and gas directly from the distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be sure that you won't experience an interruption to your electricity and gas supply when you switch retailers, because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. However, the switchover can't go ahead until after your old provider has sent you a final bill, and they can't do that until they've taken a final meter reading. So, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take as long as three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and will also tell the current provider that you are switching away from them. The switch to your new provider will not happen immediately, because the current provider will have to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then send you a final bill. The new provider only begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.

Tips to reduce your electricity usage and lower your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented tips for reducing your expenditure on electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Use the clothes dryer less. Dry the clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn all appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (jumper, booties, beanie, warm socks).
  • Close the doors to rooms that aren't in use, so that you only have to heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night to allow the cool air in, and then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Minimise lighting by making use of the available natural light and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lighting.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
