FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and decided that you want to switch electricity providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new electricity provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and stay with your old energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply the electricity to your house after you change over to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from your distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the final switchover won't go ahead until after your current provider has issued you a final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after the next time they read your meter. So, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we notify the current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual change in providers will not happen straight away, though, because the current provider will need to read your meter one final time. and then issue you a final bill. The new provider only begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Adelaide

Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of an intra-state electricity grid that enabled electricity produced in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In order to promote greater competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities

The distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.

The electricity retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. The states have between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

In July 2013, Adelaide's energy market was fully deregulated. This meant that consumers could, for the first time, change to a provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Tips for how to use less electricity to save on your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented ways for reducing how much you spend on electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Don't use the clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Turn off appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (warm socks, booties, jumper, beanie).
  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Reduce the use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible. Turn the lights off if there's no none in the room.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the house cool down, and then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller space.
