FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and you've made the choice to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new electricity provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply electricity to your premises even if you change to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from the distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply will not be interrupted because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, often within 24 hours. But the actual switchover cannot take place until after your old provider has issued you your final bill, and they will only be able to do that after a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll tell your present provider that you're moving to another provider. The switch in providers won't happen immediately, though, because your current provider will have to read your meter again, one final time. and then send you their final bill. The new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your home will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Sydney

Ever since the late 1990s Australia's electricity market in has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation. The first step involved establishing an intra-state electricity grid which allowed electricity that is produced in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.

Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In order to stimulate a greater level of competition the market was split into two levels

The distributors manage the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.

Retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Each state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

In July 2014 , the Sydney electricity market was fully deregulated. This allowed customers to change to another provider that had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in Sydney is supplied by the following three distributors

  • Endeavour Energy

Tips for reducing your electricity usage to save money

Here are some easy to implement tips for reducing your expenditure on electricity

  • Minimise use of your clothes dryer. Hang clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn off your appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear warm clothing (booties, beanie, jumper, warm socks).
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so you just cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Use less lighting by using natural light where possible and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lights.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening your windows during the night to let the house cool down, and closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
