Electricity Market Competition in NSW

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation since the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in other states.

Another stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to produce better competition the market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors look after the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. Each state has between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2014 , NSW 's electricity market was fully deregulated. This meant that customers could change to the provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is provided by the following distributors

  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy supplies electricity country and regional NSW, and also in southern regional QLD.
  • Endeavour Energy
The Endeavour Energy network supplies 2.4 million people with electricity in homes and businesses in the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Sydney's Greater West.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid's network provides electricity throughout eastern, northern and inner metropolitan Sydney and in Newcastle and the Hunter region.

Tips for reducing energy usage and lower your bills

Here are a few easily implemented tips for reducing how much you spend on energy

  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air entering or escaping through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (beanie, jumper, warm socks, booties).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Use your clothes dryer less frequently. Instead, dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Use less lighting by making use of the available natural light.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so that you only cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.

FAQ about switching energy providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and you have chosen to switch energy providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new energy provider has to give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply the energy to your premises when you change to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, however, they buy the energy at wholesale prices from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from your distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your energy supply because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the final switchover can't happen until after your present provider has sent you their final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and we tell the current provider of your move away from them. The changeover in providers won't happen immediately, because the current provider has to do a final meter reading. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider only starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
