Electricity Market Competition and Deregulation in Victoria

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a process of deregulation that began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next step, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater amount of competition the energy market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors are responsible for delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. The states have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

The Victoria market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2008 . This enabled consumers to change to the provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in Victoria is supplied by the following five distributors

  • Citipower
Citipower supplies electricity in Melbourne City and inner suburbs.
  • Powercor Australia
Powercor provides electricity in the western Victoria and western suburbs of Melbourne.
  • Jemena
Jemena distributes electricity in the south-western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.
  • United Energy Distribution
United Energy supplies electricity in the southern suburbs of Melbourne and to the Mornington Peninsula.
  • Ausnet Services
AusNet Services provides electricity to the outer northern & eastern suburbs of Melbourne and to eastern Victoria.

Tips to reduce your electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here are some easily implemented tips for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • Turn off all appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Dress for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (jumper, warm socks, booties, beanie).
  • Use your clothes dryer less often. Dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or out via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening windows at night to allow the cool air in, then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so that you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Reduce the use of lights by using natural light where possible.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have made the decision that you'd like to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider must give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and stay with your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply electricity to your house if you change to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your electricity supply because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the actual switchover can't take place until after your present provider has issued you a final bill, and they can't do that until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and will inform your present provider of your move away from them. The actual transfer to the new provider will not happen straight away, though, because your current provider needs to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor who supplies the energy to your home continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
