FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and decided that you'd like to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new gas and electricity provider allows you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and stay with your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply the gas and electricity to your house even when you change over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy gas and electricity directly from your distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, your gas and electricity supply will not be interrupted because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often within 24 hours. But the final switchover will not happen until after your current provider has issued you their final bill, and they will only be able to do that after they've taken a final meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll notify the current provider that you are leaving them. The actual changeover in providers will not happen straight away, because the current provider will need to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then send you their final bill. The new provider will begin charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from the new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Competition in Melbourne

Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a process of deregulation. The first stage of deregulation was to establish an intra-state electricity grid that enabled electricity generated in one state to be sold in other states.

The next stage, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In order to promote a greater amount of competition the energy market was split into two types of entities

The distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.

The electricity retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

The electricity market in Melbourne was fully deregulated in July 2008 . This meant that consumers could now change to the provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Tips for reducing electricity consumption to save on your bills

Here are a few easy to implement ways for reducing your electricity consumption

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors or around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Wear warm clothing, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, jumper, booties, beanie).
  • Use the clothes dryer less frequently. Instead, dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Reduce the use of lights by making use of the available natural light.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close the doors of rooms that aren't in use, so you just heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to allow the house cool down, and shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
